2003 Maryland State AAU Tournament: Two Hurricanes Teams Win Championships

Two Maryland Hurricanes teams -- 12-under and 15-under -- won championships at the Maryland State Girls AAU Tournament in the Baltimore area May 2-20, 2003

12-Under State Champions

The 12-under Hurricanes team won the title May 18 at Notre Dame College in Baltimore with a convincing 67-43 victory over the Seminoles, the 2002 11-under defending champion.

Congratulations to the players, coaches and parents for a well-deserved title. Congratulations also to the Seminoles. Both teams represented the Maryland Association July 11-19 at the AAU 12-under Nationals in Lafayette, LA.

In the Maryland championship game, the 12-under Hurricanes jumped out to a 22-13 halftime lead before cruising to victory in the second half. The Hurricanes got outstanding performances from Khadija Mitchell, who led the way with 22 points; Danielle Parker, who scored 18, and Kandice Green, who added 14. It was truly a team effort, especially on defense, as the Hurricanes finished the tournament undefeated.

15-Under State Champions

The 15-under Hurricanes team coached by Don Beasley and Juan Baker won the title on May 20 at Notre Dame. These Hurricanes beat the 15-under Maryland Waves club twice in the double-elimination championship round, winning 76-64 on May 18 and 75-66 on May 20.

This Hurricanes team went on to play at the 15-under AAU Nationals July 18-26 in Virginia Beach, VA, finishing 9th in the nation. Click here for the 15-under National results: http://www.aaugirlsbasketball.org/pages/results/2003/finals/15u.htm

The 11-under team finished fifth in its Championship Bracket and went on to compete in the U.S. Junior Nationals in July in New Haven, CT.

The 13-under team finished third in its division and qualified for the 13-under AAU Nationals July 23-31 in Dayton, OH.

The 16-under Hurricanes team finished third in its state Championship Bracket.

Before the championship games, our five teams had posted a 27-7 record in both Championship Bracket and Pool Play, and a combined 15-0 record in Pool Play May 2-3.

The Hurricanes organization congratulates all the Maryland Girls AAU clubs for another good tournament in 2003.
