Hurricanes News Line 2007Sept. 7, 2007 July 16, 2007 June 25, 2007 Talen Watson, a member of the Hurricanes Howell 16s team and a rising sophomore at Arundel High, has been invited to attend the Adidas Top Ten All -American 7th/8th/9th Grade Camp July 9 at the Sunawee Sports Academy outside of Atlanta. The 8th annual Adidas showcase is widely recognized as one of the top high school basketball recruiting camp in the country. Over the past seven years the camp has showcased more than 64 All-Americans, including the likes of Tiffany Jackson (Texas), Simone Augustus (LSU) and Monique Currie (Duke). March 16, 2007 March 12, 2007 Now college sophomores, Ana Baker (Arundel), Stacy Hunt (South River) and Xenia Stewart (Riverdale Baptist) are all on teams in the Big Dance this year. Alex McGuire (Arundel) played in the tournament with her team in 2006. Here's a breakdown: Ana Baker's University of North Carolina-Asheville reached the tournament as a 14th seed after winning the Big South Conference championship and will play a first-round game vs. LSU. Baker played a key role in the team's success, averaging 3.3 assists per game and playing a team high 31.3 minutes per contest. UNC-Asheville has a 21-11 record and are in the tournament for the first time. Stacy Hunt's University of Maryland-Baltimore County team is one of the tournament's big surprises. UMBC is a 16 seed after an upset run in the America East Conference to win the tournament championship. Hunt's team's record is 16-16 and plays perennial power Connecticut in the first round. It is UMBC's first appearance in the tournament. Xenia Stewart averages 11.4 points and 4.7 rebounds per game for Pittsburgh of the Big East Conference, which received an at large bid to the tournament. Stewart has helped lead her team to 23-8 record. The No. 9 seed goes up against James Madison in the first round of the tournament. Alex McGuire's Army team did not make the tournament this year, but McGuire played as a freshman. Army finished the season 24-6 and barely missed the tournament, losing in the 57-53 to Lehigh in the Patriot League quarterfinals. McGuire was the team's second leading scorer at 12.1 ppg for the season. "Ana, Alex, Stacy, and Xenia all started for the Hurricanes a few years ago. The organization gave them their start and molded them into the student athletes that they are today," said Juan Baker, Ana's father and a coach with the champion Beasley team.
Congratulations to these trailblazing Hurricanes! March 11, 2007 As always, we congratulate all the teams throughout the region that will be competing for a Maryland District AAU championship. Here is a snapshot of our 2007 teams: 16-and-Under Coughlan: This star-studded Hurricanes team has defined AAU girls' basketball in the Baltimore area the past few years. The core of the team has played together since 12-and-under and has won four consecutive Maryland District championships. It is hard to know where to start when describing the accomplishments of the Coughlan team players. Two players were Baltimore Sun Players of the Week. Three started in the IAAM Conference title game. One led her team to an undefeated regular season. And another helped her team to the MPSSAA Class 2A title. The list of accomplishments is long. Coaches Mike Coughlan, Kevin Green and Suzanne Coughlan are gearing up for another successful run. 16-and-Under Howell: This talented Hurricanes team finished third in 15-under in 2006 and will be looking to make another strong showing this year. With players attending schools like Mercy, Roland Park Country, Annapolis, Winters Mill, Aberdeen and Fallston, coaches Sonya Howell and Stephanie Tolbert have re-tooled after finishing the 2006 season with six players by adding several area high school standouts. Coach Howell has coached for several years on the high school scene at Beth Tfiloh School in Baltimore County. 16-and-Under Rosemond: Coach Bookie Rosemond, the assistant girls varsity coach at Severna Park High, will be entering his fourth year as a Hurricanes coach. Rosemond, who won the Maryland District Shootout championship in 2005 in 14-and-under, expects to have his most talented team. Most of the girls come out of Anne Arundel County, representing schools like Severna Park, South River and Severn, but also Winters Mill and North Caroll in Carroll County and Seton Keough in Baltimore. 15-Under Aiken: In 2006, the Hurricanes did not field 14-and-under teams, but we expect to come back strong in 15-under this year. Many girls in this age have played "up" the past couple of years, and our intent is to get them back in their age groups to begin the process of college exposure. Coaches Suzanne Aiken and Megan Zoltek will be leading their first Hurricanes team. Both are former AAU, high school and college players. Coach Aiken is a former athlete at Bryn Mawr School and current assistant girls varsity coach at Beth Tfiloh School. Coach Zoltek is from Philadelphia and played many years in the Fencor AAU organization. 15-Under Banks: Coaches Sylvester Banks and Rolynda Contee promise to give the Hurricanes two strong 15-under teams and help the organization add some deserving Baltimore-based players to the organization. Coach Banks is girls varsity basketball coach at Southwestern High in Baltimore and Coach Contee an assistant at Baltimore City College high school. Both have connections throughout Baltimore and expect to field a top team. Coach Banks is affiliated with former Hurricanes Coach Don Beasley, now the women's basketball coach at Morgan University. Coach Beasley's former Hurricanes team won four consecutive Maryland District AAU championships, led by the likes of Alex McGuire and Ana Baker, both college standouts today. 14-Under Anderson: Coach Steve Anderson is a long-time coach out of Anne Arundel County and coached in 2006 in the MYBA organization. Coach Anderson is a professional and intense coach on a three-year mission with his team of 9th-graders. The first is to prepare the team to play increased roles on their high school teams in the fall and then to point them to the start of college exposure. Coach Anderson has been recruiting players throughout the Baltimore region. 13-Under Anderson: Coaches Chris Anderson and Hermond Palmer have quietly been assembling their team since December for a first run at AAU competition. Both coaches come out of Howard County, where the majority of the players live. The goal is to prepare these 8th graders to compete for positions on their high school teams in the fall. These are some of the girls who will be future players at Howard schools whether River Hill, Atholton, Mount Hebron or the Columbia high schools. 12-Under Watts: It is no secret in AAU that 12-and-under is the age group where high school coaches begin to survey the landscape and take notice of future players. Coaches Kwame Watts and Brandon Phillips are ready to put this talented squad of 7th graders on display while focusing the hard work on teaching and fundamentals in practice. Both coaches come to the Hurricanes from the MYBA organization to lead this Anne Arundel County-based team. 10-Under Scruggs: Coach Jonathan Scruggs coaches his first Hurricanes team this year, but is no stranger to big-time AAU girls' basketball. Coach Scruggs moved to Baltimore from Ohio in 2006 to attend law school. He coached 11-and-under and 15-and-under for the Dayton Lady Hoopstars and took clubs to AAU national tournaments. A former college basketball player, Coach Scruggs has assembled a team of budding stars from throughout the region, including Baltimore, Howard and Anne Arundel counties. 9-Under Greene: The Hurricanes traditionally has been strongest in the high school division because of the superior coaches we have been able to attract. But be sure to check out these baby Hurricanes -- girls born in 1997 and 1998 -- coached by Hurricanes President Marvin Greene. Learning the game from the ground up and fundamentals is this team's focus for their first year of AAU ball. Feb. 26, 2007 Feb. 23, 2007 Feb. 10, 2007 Davis, a 5-foot-9 shooting guard, played on the Maryland District state champion Hurricanes Coughlan 15s in 2006. Davis won her honor Feb. 7, leading her Arundel team to two victories - scored 24 points in a 71-59 victory over Old Mill and 17 points and seven rebounds in a 79-23 shellacking of Broadneck. Arundel, the defending Anne Arundel County champion, is undefeated so far during the 2006-2007 high school season. For the season, Davis averages 15.5 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists. Earlier in the season, two other Hurricanes -- Jenn Rindone of Archbishop Spalding and Destiny Jacobs at McDonogh School - won the Sun's Player of the Week honors. Feb. 5, 2007 The Mercy-IND game is played each year at Towson University before passionate fans. It was the first time Mercy had beaten IND in The Game in five years before a sold-out crowd. Coverage in the Baltimore Sun quoted Mitchell as follows after the game: "We haven't won this game since I have been here and I just really wanted to pull it off. At first, my shot was not falling, but I knew I had to move in and shoot because they would eventually start falling." That"s confidence in a big victory. Congratulations to Mitchell. Congratulations are in order for Dawn Spriggs, the team manager and treasurer for the Hurricanes 12s Watts team. Spriggs completed her first Triathlon in 4hrs 38mins 16seconds in Ellicott City on May 20, 2007. The picture was taken by her husband Dave as she crossed the finish line. Spriggs " daughter Danielle is a member of the Watts team and attends school at Arundel Middle.
Kandice Green led her St. Frances Academy team into the finals March 10 of the Bishop Walsh Girls Invitational Tournament Cumberland, MD, only to come up short to Notre Dame Academy of Middleburg, VA (ranked 5th nationally). The prestigious Bishop Walsh Girls Invitational is an invite only tournament consisting of the top Catholic schools in the Washington-Baltimore areas. Other schools headlining the tournament this year included Good Counsel, Bishop McNamara, St, John's, Seton Keough and Archbishop Carroll. Green, who plays for the Hurricanes Coughlan team, displayed superb offensive and defensive skills by averaging 17 points and 14 rebounds per game throughout the tournament. She was named the tournament "s Most Outstanding Player and selected to the All-Tournament Team. Job well done from your Hurricanes teammates and coaching staff!
Brittany Coughlan of the Hurricanes Coughlan team spearheaded a tenacious and relentless effort leading Atholton (25-3) to its first Class 2A Maryland State Championship March 10 at UMBC. Coughlan displayed leadership throughout the tournament by averaging 18 points, 6 assists, 6 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks. Coughlan utilized her aggressiveness and speed to attack the height-laden defense of the Walkersville Lions (Frederick County) on the offensive end and assisted the Lady Raiders in causing 27 turnovers in a pivotal win in the semifinal game. In the fast-paced championship game against Southern-Anne Arundel County, Coughlan was the outside threat, making four 3-pointers in the contest, while contributing key steals during a game-changing 21-1 Atholton run in the fourth quarter. The Lady Raiders defeated Potomac High School to secure the 2A South Region title for their second straight berth in the Maryland State Tournament. Congratulations to the Lady Raiders from the Hurricanes coaching staff and teammates.
Last but not least, Coach Don Beasley is also making waves with his Morgan women's team. The club beat No. 1 seeded Coppin State team in the MEAC semifinals, 69-67 in overtime. Morgan lost in the final to Delaware State, barely missing a berth in the NCAA tournament. Morgan finished its season 18-13, the most wins in its history, and Beasley was named MEAC Coach of the Year. 
Arundel High sophomore Ashley Davis is the third Hurricanes player to be named Baltimore Sun Player of the Week during the current girls' high school basketball season.
Congratulations to Mercy High junior point guard Khadija Mitchell for leading her team to victory in "The Game" Feb. 2. Mitchell, who plays for the Hurricanes Howell 16s team, scored 15 points to pace her team in a fierce rivalry game over the Institute of Notre Dame, 47-34.
Destiny Jacobs is the second consecutive Hurricanes player to be named Baltimore Sun Player of the Week. The 6-foot-1 junior center at McDonogh had three strong games to help the Eagles win their Holly 'N Hoops holiday tournament. Jacobs had 41 points, 31 rebounds and 10 blocks for the week, including 20 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks in a 78-50 win over T.S. Wootton. Click here for the complete article from Jan. 3:
