Hurricanes 14s Anderson Team Touches Down at YBOA Nationals
Summertime basketball usually means trips to AAU Nationals or college exposure tournaments such as Blue Chip, USJN and Nike Summer Slam. But Coach Chris Anderson’s Hurricanes 14s team (girls born in 1993) embarked on a different journey July 12-19. The team headed off to Orlando, FL, to compete in the lesser-known Youth Basketball of America Inc. nationals.
Besides all the attractions offered in the Orlando area, these Hurricanes garnered a fifth-place finish at the tournament, lugging home a big team trophy along with some individual and team awards. Despite losing its contests in pool play, the girls bounced back in the next round to beat two Georgia teams for fifth place. The team also finished first the 14-under division in the YBOA Team Hot Shot contest shooting competition. Other states with teams at the tournament included Tennessee, South Carolina, Florida and North Carolina.
Rebecca Coughlin was an all-tournament selection representing the Hurricanes. “It was great to see our players stepping up their game each time they went on the court,” Anderson said.
Anderson’s team is the first Hurricanes team to participate at the YBOA nationals, whose format is similar to AAU.
Anderson said the coaches, players and parents joined together to ensure a successful trip. Anderson said special thanks are in order for Gary and Rhonda Leasure (Lindsey's parents) who served as the team “tour guide” and Lisa Dudley (Alexandra's mom) for arranging for the nice hotel accommodations.
“All the parents and family members supported the team above and beyond throughout the week and cheered extra loud and motivated our players to victory in some of the most exciting games we've ever played. What an experience and fun we had while advancing our level of play,” Anderson said.

Lillian Drumgold Returns to the Hurricanes – This Time as a Coach
Lillian Drumgold was a member of the great Hurricanes team from the Class of 2001
By the mid to late 1990s, Lillian Drumgold was on her way to becoming a great AAU and high school player in Baltimore.
Drumgold played on top Maryland Hurricanes teams in AAU -- when we were known widely as the “Chesapeake Bay Hurricanes” -- as well as on great Western High School teams. The 5-10 Drumgold was an All-Metro player as a Western junior and senior and averaged 17 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists per game as a senior. Her snapshot: “very athletic guard … skilled defender … a slasher to the basket … great speed … can create her shot.” Her team went 18-4 in her senior year.
Drumgold came back to the Hurricanes in February to serve as an assistant coach on the Scruggs 11-under team composed of girls born in 1995 and 1996. Her current players on the Scruggs team were mere toddlers then, but how lucky they are to have a player of Drumgold reputation to come back and help them improve their games.
Drumgold traveled with the team recently when it won an AAU trophy and medals at the Division II Championship in New Haven, Connecticut.
Drumgold was a member of the high school Class of 2001 – and one of the greatest Hurricanes team ever. All 12 players went on to receive college scholarships for basketball.
Drumgold went to North Carolina-Wilmington and later Bucknell. Keisha Blackwell of Seton Keough went to Providence; Rayna Dubose of Oakland Mills went to Virginia Tech; Esther Ehrmann of Roland Park Country School went to Drexel; Ashley Evans of Centennial High went to Ohio State; Brianne Gray of Northern (Calvert County) went to Elon; Erin Jaschik of Mount Hebron went to Columbia; Maura Lentz of Catonsville High went to Franklin & Marshall; Katie Nelson of McDonogh School went to Massachusetts;
Jill Marano of Arundel went to LaSalle; Tracy Pucci of Arundel went to Charleston Southern and Kelsey Twist of Roland Park went to Stanford.
Drumgold works today in Baltimore as an organizer and program coordinator for a local non-profit organization, but her Hurricanes and high school days are still in reach of good memories.
“It was like a family. We had a lot of support and guidance,” Drumgold says of her 2001 Hurricanes team, coached then by Deb Taylor and Chet Lipton.
Drumgold says flatly, “I would not have gotten a scholarship if it were not for the Hurricanes.”
As for today’s up and coming players who are seeking to play on the college level – including probably some of the Scruggs players and other players in the Hurricanes organization – Drumgold says the bottom line is commitment.
"You have to seriously commit yourself, maintain a positive attitude, set your goals and have a support system,” Drumgold says.
When Hurricanes president Marvin Greene learned in February that Drumgold would be coming to assist coach Jonathan Scruggs with the 1996 team, he called it a big step for the organization.
“We are a voluntary organization. Our biggest challenge is finding qualified volunteer coaches to coach our girls. We hope that other former Hurricanes players will follow Lillian’s lead and come back too and help develop the next generation of great Hurricanes players,” Greene said.

Hurricanes Scruggs Team Places Third in AAU D-2 11-Under Classic Championship
Coming out of pool play with a 1-2 record and minus 10 points, the team gathered itself for an incredible run in the Classic double-elimination bracket. The Hurricanes dropped its first game in the Classic winner's bracket 27-22 to the Connecticut Storm Black That loss meant the team had to fight its way through the Classic loser bracket and avoid a second loss -- and fight the team did. The Hurricanes then went on to win its next five games in a row, beating the Connecticut Fire, 47-15, Hampton Road (VA) Hurricanes 37-15, Lower Bucks (PA) Lightning 40-31, Connecticut Storm Black 25-17 and New Jersey Shore Sharks, 44-29. The five consecutive wins set up the team for a game versus the Rhode Island Lady Cyclones -- the Hurricanes third game of the day. The Cyclones prevailed 38-31, ending the Hurricanes remarkable run. The Hurricanes finished third in the Classic tournament behind the Cyclones and eventual Classic champion Westchester (NY) Hoopers. The Hurricanes girls received AAU medals and a team trophy for their efforts. The Hurricanes demonstrated the beauty of AAU -- that no matter what you keep advancing until you get that second loss. Coach Jonathan Scruggs said the girls grew as a team during the tournament and represented the Hurricanes organization with class, sportsmanship and determination. The Hurricanes 1996 Scruggs team placed third in the Classic Championship bracket in AAU's 11-under Division 2 tournament June 27-July in New Haven, Connecticut. These Hurricane girls played an incredible 10 games during the week, finishing with 6 wins and 4 losses and barely missing the Classic title game on the last day of the tournament.May 19, 2008
Hurricanes' Rosemond named girls' varsity basketball coach at Spalding
Congratulations from the Hurricanes family to Coach Bill "Bookie" Rosemond -- named on May 12 as the new girls‚ varsity basketball coach at Archbishop Spalding High School in Severn, Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
Rosemond has been a Hurricanes coach since 2004, leading primarily high school-age teams. For the 2008 AAU season, Rosemond coached the Hurricanes 16-under team (girls born in 1991) in the Maryland District Tournament during May and will coach the team during college exposure tournaments during the summer.
At Spalding, a private, Catholic co-educational high school, Rosemond will lead his new team into battle against some of the top girls‚ programs in the area in the A Conference of the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM). Spalding finished the 2007-2008 season with a 20-8 overall record and 10-6 in conference under former coach Deb Taylor.
"I am very familiar with Spalding‚s program and the awesome reputation it has carried over the years. I am ready to lead it to even greater levels of excellence," Rosemond told the Digitalsports.com Web site.
Rosemond, who resides in Anne Arundel County, previously coached as an assistant at Severna Park High School. He is very familiar with top Baltimore-area girls' basketball. His Hurricanes teams over the years have drawn players from area high schools that include Winters Mill, Arundel, South River, Bryn Mawr, Severna Park, Severn, Archbishop Keough, Century, and Institute of Notre Dame.
